What the course will cover:

The tuition will take you from a bare canvas to varnishing & framing a portrait painting in oils.  Tuition will be based on time-honoured classical teaching & make reference to early art history & contemporary painters to address every aspect of portrait painting.

  • A study of the anatomy of the head & body
  • Colour palettes
  • Essential materials & equipment
  • How to begin a portrait
  • Posing the model
  • Using photographs
  • Perspective, placement & proportion
  • Painting features & mixing flesh colours
  • Colour & tone
  • Painting atmospheric backgrounds
  • Selection & preparation of canvases & panels
  • Alla prima & glazing techniques
  • Capturing likeness & personality
  • Painting more than head & shoulders
  • Difficult areas such as hair & eyes
  • Painting jewellery & spectacles
  • What: 6 weeks tuition with artist Eric Hoyle

Time: 10am – 3pm

The course will include painting from live models, how to utilise photographs successfully & learn the value of self portraiture.  A list of essential equipment & materials is provided & some materials can be bought from the tutor.

There will be a free Oil Painting Demonstration on Saturday 24th November 12 noon till 2.30 at London Rd Studios where you can ask the tutor about the course.  All welcome.  Refreshments available.  No booking required for the demonstration.
